Update: I will continue to add images of the middle schooler's progress to the photo gallery in this post. Look for the final projects at the musical May 23, 24, 25 @ 7:00pm. Before Spring Break, the middle schoolers made a lot of progress in various set design elements for the school musical "The Little Mermaid Jr." From sea weed to King Triton's triton, they're really diving in to the projects :)

I'm sorry I don't have more photos of this project, I will add more to the gallery later! The past few classes, I have talked to students about making visual measurements to mimic the proportions of an object, in their drawings. Students are making a detailed drawing of an object of their choice, and began painting them using water colors, starting with light layers.
In order to warm up the new cycle of middle school students, I had them draw a very challenging subject- their own hands. The twist, is they drew their hands while holding their initials in American Sign Language. The first class, students started with the basic lines and shapes, and on Thursday they began to shade them. They're ff to a great start!
Unfortunately, both enrichment classes were cancelled last week due to the Spelling Bee and a Snow Day. Our last class will be this Tuesday the 14th. On Friday, I offered students the chance to take their drawings home to work on over the weekend. We'll do our best to catch up on Tuesday. They're all off to such a great start!
The middle schoolers are moving on to their next project. I've asked them to think of an animal that they feel they share personality traits with. For this project, they will draw a hybrid of a portrait and their animal. They first started by drawing a grid on their paper that is in proportion with the grid over their photograph. It will be up to each student to decide how much of them will be human and how much will be animal. I'm looking forward to watch these come along!
(2/6/17) *I've added photos o some of the progress from last week to the gallery below Last week, students made great strides in their zentangle designs. I will upload their finished designs to the gallery below when they are complete!
This week began a new cycle of students, and what better way to set the tone for drawing than a still life? I showed students images of still lifes from various artists, and then told them our twist- that the background will be comprised of a zentangle design. Students will be able to create repeating patterns in their background to contrast their still life. They're off to a great start!
This past week, students pushed themselves and it is paying off. After thinking of an envrinoment that they could draw in one point perspective, they set to work. These are all very unique and off to a great start!
Sadly, this group has missed a few classes due to scheduling lately, but they have been working diligently to catch up. This past week, they continued to color in and complete their illuminated letters. Some even added glitter, to give their work a special finishing touch.
I also talked with the group about one point perspective as a technique that helps to create an illusion of space. Students learned about the horizon line and vanishing point and used a worksheet to practice drawing shapes in perspective. They also began to brainstorm ideas for their next project. I've asked students to create a space using one point perspective. This space could be indoors or outdoors, but needs to have the objects drawn in perspective, receding towards the vanishing point. I'm excited to see this work unfold! The middle schoolers have also had a choppy schedule lately, but they have been working hard on their illuminated letters. Last class, a lot of them progressed onto coloring their final designs, and some students are still coming up with new ideas and symbols to incorporate into their artwork. Check out the progress so far!
