Hello! It has been a while since I’ve posted, my students and I have been busy! To see snapshots of our projects from this past Fall, follow my instagram @msRartroom
Thanks to he help of some awesome parent volunteers, you can now find art hanging throughout the whole school, and as always, in the art room. Here are are the highlights: Kindergarteners explored materials and textures and carefully constructed collage self portraits. First graders are studying arctic animals with their classroom teachers, so they drew an arctic animal of their choice, paying close attention to the texture of their skin or fur. They also created some birds eye view snowmen to keep their animals company. Second graders practiced patterns and created thoughtful drawings inspired by Brazilian artist, Romero Britto. And are also finishing up some winter landscapes, and practicing mixing different values of blue for their sky. Third graders followed up their Dia De Los Muertos projects by learning about the significance of the Aztec sun stone. They used construction paper crayons to practice contrasting warm and cool colors in their own sun stone design with geometric shapes. They then brushed up on ancient Egypt and created prints of cartouche with their name in hieroglyphics. Fourth graders have been weaving away, and recently completed radial weavings as a nod to their tile prints with radial balance. They are now off to study architecture from Ancient Greece, so ask your child what is their favorite style of Greek Columns! Fifth graders completed bright, unique and beautiful paintings inspired by Alma Thomas, the first African American female artist to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney. Students were thoughtful in this process, from their thumbnail sketches to their reflections. Sixth graders are in the midst of working with clay to create slab built sarcophagi to go along with the mummies they made in social studies. Seventh graders practiced mixing tints, tones, shades and hues and applied this knowledge to a color wheel of their design. Eight graders also wrapped up a color mixing unit and painted an abstract design with various values of analogous colors. Check out student art work during conferences this week!

This year, the fourth graders will focus on design and architecture across cultures. They dove right in and began studying radial symmetry in the architecture of various cultures, such as windows in churches and mosques. These artists have really mastered the art of radial design already, and are finishing up their own design. Parents, ask your child what radial a balance is, or "what is a mandala?" :)
The fifth graders have been practicing the art of observation! Over the past few classes, we've talked about line drawings and how to create space by overlapping their objects. Using new value pencils, they're practicing shading techniques. These artists are finding their own style and doing an amazing job exploring their new tools and techniques.
Middle Schoolers have been enjoying the weather over the past week, and are practicing the art of drawing from observation in this "En Plein Air" elective. Students are sketching the school grounds and will experiment with paint, practicing different techniques to bring this art to life!
For the kindergartener's first project, I read the book "Beautiful Oops" by Barney Saltzberg. We talked about how to use our imagination to help us turn a scrap piece of paper into something new. Students selected their inspirational scraps, twisted and turned them until it reminded them of an idea. they then finished their idea with crayons. This work is hanging outside the kindergarten classrooms, be sure to check it out if you can!
all students began the first week of art getting situated, touring the room and making portfolios where they will store their work. The first graders first project after this was one of my favorites. After reading "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds, I encouraged students to make their mark! The result is a beautiful series of lines, colors, textures and creative experiments that is now hanging in the art room. Love these!
