This year, the fourth graders will focus on design and architecture across cultures. They dove right in and began studying radial symmetry in the architecture of various cultures, such as windows in churches and mosques. These artists have really mastered the art of radial design already, and are finishing up their own design. Parents, ask your child what radial a balance is, or "what is a mandala?" :)

The fifth graders have been practicing the art of observation! Over the past few classes, we've talked about line drawings and how to create space by overlapping their objects. Using new value pencils, they're practicing shading techniques. These artists are finding their own style and doing an amazing job exploring their new tools and techniques.
Middle Schoolers have been enjoying the weather over the past week, and are practicing the art of drawing from observation in this "En Plein Air" elective. Students are sketching the school grounds and will experiment with paint, practicing different techniques to bring this art to life!
For the kindergartener's first project, I read the book "Beautiful Oops" by Barney Saltzberg. We talked about how to use our imagination to help us turn a scrap piece of paper into something new. Students selected their inspirational scraps, twisted and turned them until it reminded them of an idea. they then finished their idea with crayons. This work is hanging outside the kindergarten classrooms, be sure to check it out if you can!
all students began the first week of art getting situated, touring the room and making portfolios where they will store their work. The first graders first project after this was one of my favorites. After reading "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds, I encouraged students to make their mark! The result is a beautiful series of lines, colors, textures and creative experiments that is now hanging in the art room. Love these!
