Last week, I talked with the first graders about our friend, Roy. ROY G BIV is an acronym for the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet). For this class, I had students draw a portrait of our friend Roy, who can be any gender, while leaving seven blank spaces in the hair for the colors of the rainbow. We had a nice review of all of the details that we can add to a face, from the eyes, mouth and nose, to the eye lids pupil and iris. Next week, students will mix the colors and paint the hair.

Due to scheduling, one section of first grade had an extra class. What better way to spend that class than reviewing primary colors, before jumping into our next color mixing project?
This was a class well spent. Students had total creative control over their subject and the only clause was that they could not mix colors to create new ones. This took a moment for them to wrap their minds around, but they soon dove in. With the election coming, there were a few political drawings such as a portrait of Hillary Clinton and the American Flag. There was also a great deal of Pokemon related paintings, with Pikachu being the poster child for primary colors :) |
