Last week, I talked to the first graders about what artists draw, which includes:
1) What they see 2) What they remember 3) What they imagine 4) What they feel After explaining that artists uses still lives to practice looking, drawing and painting, I instructed students to observe their still life of art supplies and to pay close attention to the relationships- what is the tallest? smallest? to the left or the right? They practiced using rulers as a straight edge to help them complete their sketch. In one class period, they did a great job moving from a pencil sketch to a complete drawing. Well done, first graders!

First graders listened to the book “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds, a story about a student who does not know what to draw, but started with a simple dot. Her teacher encourages her to see where the dot can take her, and she ends up making an inspiring series of dots with varying color, size and textures. First graders were likewise encouraged to ‘think outside the dot’ in their mark making and to put a creative spin on a simple idea. Using crayons and watercolors, they've created a variety of dynamic dots!
