Last week, the second graders learned about the life and work of Brazilian artist Romero Britto, whose work makes my students feel "happy", "surprised", and "excited". After making observations as to what makes Britto's work so unique, students set out to create their own design in a similar style. Students are working on animals, objects or people as the main focus of their pieces. They spent the first class sketching their focal point, lines and patterns and were encouraged to enlarge their drawing so it takes up most of the page. They're off to a wonderful start!

The second graders will spend the year creating artwork inspired by contemporary artists. Before diving into the contemporary, the second graders learned a bit about the American Artist, Jasper Johns, who liked to use images and symbols that are “familiar to the mind”, such as the American flag, numbers and letters. Students used oil pastels to write their names, and painted over them as they experimented with color combinations for each letter creating overall harmonious and vibrant works of art.
Note- the images shown are just a portion of their beautiful creations to keep student names private. However, artwork will be displayed at back to school night where you can find your child's work! |
