Today, I read the book "Lines that Wiggle" by Candace Whitman and talked about lines. We discussed how lines make up shapes, have direction, are expressive and can show movement. I then presented the first graders with a challenge. Could they create a line design by abiding by the following guidelines?
- Draw two lines in the same direction (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) -The lines cannot intersect -The lines should go from one edge of the page to another (not float in the middle) Once the two lines were drawn in black, students were asked to use their imagination and turn the lines into a picture using colors. They were asked to do four drawings and mount them to colored paper. Pretty creative results!

What is a line? What is abstract? What's a composition?
This week, the second graders reviewed different types of lines and created their own abstract line compositions! We discussed how lines make up the world around us. They create shapes, letters numbers, they can show motion, they can be expressive and they travel in an infinite amount of directions, including but not limited to vertical, horizontal and diagonal. After drawing various lines across their page, they made frames, found an interesting junction in their art and glued it down. They used oil pastels to color in the shapes. Voila! |
