Last Friday was the second day of school for my kindergarteners, and a great day for their first art lesson. I began the class with some art class rules and am excited to see the students grow this year. I read "The Art Lesson" by Tomie DePaola, a story that debunks myths children might have about their art classes and celebrates creativity. For our project, the students were asked to use crayons (just like Tomie) and draw one thing that makes them smile. They did a great job!

My kindergarteners have moved up to first grade and began the day last Friday ready to create. It was nice to see so many familiar faces. I chose another Peter Reynolds book for their first lesson. His book "The Dot" encourages kids to make their mark, and see where it takes them. Students were asked to start with a dot and see what they could create. I love the colors, lines and textures!Today was the first art class for my second graders! After going over some rules and routines for the year, I read "Ish" by Peter H. Reynolds, a story about a boy who loves to draw and realizes it doesn't matter if the drawing is "right". To get everyone warmed up for the year, we did 3 small "ish" drawings.
Drawing 1: Observational drawing of an object. Drawing 2: A feeling. Drawing 3: Something from your imagination or memory. See some results below! |
